The Science Behind SLEEP

Valerian Root - 600mg

Valerian is an herb used as a sleep aid supplement due to its calming properties. This herb also might help you relax and may help people who have anxiety. A study done in 2021 found that people noticed a higher quality sleep when taking 530mg of valerian root an hour before bed for a month. In 2020 a review was done that included 60 studies, which found that valerian could be a safe and effective supplement to help with sleep and to help prevent other sleep related disorders.

L-Theanine - 400mg

It might be odd to some to see Theanine paired with caffeine (in preworkouts and such) and then see it in a sleep aid as well. When paired with caffeine it helps increase focus and attention. When used without caffiene, it helps relieve anxiety and stress. Research suggests that it relaxes the mind and doesn't make you drowsy. When it comes to sleep research, it has shown that doses of 250-400mg improved sleep in humans and animals by a significant amount. Another study done with children showed that theanine supplementation promoted longer, more restful sleep . We do not recommend any sleep aids for children due to lack of research showing safety.

Ashwagandha  - 300mg

One of the most beneficial supplements on the market for a variety of reasons. You can check our preworkout science section for the additional benefits of this root. We'll just focus on the sleep and mood aspect here. Ashwagandha is another root that has been used for thousands for years to help increase energy levels, improve focus, and relieve stress. A 60 person study was done which found that 240mg of ashwagandha a day significantly reduced anxiety as opposed to placebo. When taking 300mg of ashwagandha 2 times daily found that it significantly improved sleep quality and their mental function when waking. Due to the popularity of Ashwagandha we dose it at 300mg for the anxiety effect. To help your mind calm down before bed. Most supplements on the market have Ashwagandha dosed at 300mg. So with their current supplemental regiment in addition to our sleep aid before bed, they will normally get the effective dose for the sleep quality portion.

GABA - 300mg

GABA ( Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) is a naturally occuring amino acid that works as a neurotransmitter in your brain.  Neurotransmitters work as chemical messagers. GABA works to slow or stop certain signals in your brain which descreases nervous system activity. When GABA attaches to a GABA receptor in your brain it produces a calming effect. A study done in 2018 dosed participants with 300mg of GABA an hour before bed . They not only fell asleep faster, but also had improved sleep quality after 4 weeks.

5-HTP - 100mg

5-Hydroxytryptophan is another amino acid that your body produces. Your body uses 5-htp to produce serotonin. Low serotonin levels are usually linked with depression, sleep disorders, anxiety and other health issues. 5-HTP can help with sleep by increasing your melatonin production. Melatonin is important for regulating sleep. They lower in the mornings when you wake up and rise at night before you go to bed. A study showed that a combination of GABA and 5-HTP greatly reduced the time to fall asleep, helped with the duration and quality of sleep.

Melatonin - 5mg

A popular supplement, Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in your brain. It's main job is to regulate your circadian rhythm, which helps manage your natural sleep cycle. One study with 50 people showed that taking melatonin 2 hours before bed helped them fall asleep faster and improved sleep quality. A lesser know disorder is called SAD which is Seasonal affective disorder. You know how we talked about circadian rhythm a second ago? When seasons change you either get more or less light which can disrupt your circadian clock. Since melatonin plays a role in regulating this "clock", your body could stop making the same amount depending on the season due to the light flunctions mentioned above.  A study done in 2006 showed that altered circadian rhythms due to seasonal depression had symptoms effectively reduced when taking melatonin. This isnt to say that melatonin cures seasonal depression. We're still waiting on more studies to find that conclusive. Melatonin has been shown to improve eye health as well. A study with people supplementing 3mg of melatonin for 6 months to 2 years showed it helped protect retina, delay age related damage and preserve visual clarity.
